Million Man March
Religion was and still is an important part of society and culture. ... A great example of such a gathering of a community is the great march to Washington D. ... known as the Million Man March of October 16, 1995. Unity was the goal of that march, and it showed by the estimated number of 870,000 African-American marchers and supporters who came that day. That march represented the importance of society and culture in the African-American community. ... Though this march represented unity among the African-American communities who believed in the Islamic religion across the nation, Karl Marx and Antonio Gramsci would have disagreed, but also agreed in many aspects of this march. ... The Million Man March is a perfect example because it involves all the aspects that both these men’s theories talk about.
On October 16, 1995, African-American men, women, and children from across the country gathered on Washington’s National Mall; which later was known in history as the Million Man March. “One of the largest civil rights demonstrations ever held in the United States, the march drew an estimated four hundred thousand to one million African-American men from across the country” (African-American History & Culture: 1995). This march soon became known as the ““Day of Atonement”, during which African-American men were to express remorse for mistreatment of women and behavior detrimental to the black community” (Altman: 2000). As the march continued many other cultures joined in as well; participants from other churches, many schools and especially social organizations came to support a mass of unknown people, who marched for their beliefs. This march was aiming for, unity, atonement, brotherhood, and it also asked everyone, to clean up their lives and rebuild the neighborhoods around them.
