respect for the deaf

Respect for the Deaf

The life of a deaf person can be uneasy and complex, especially when trying to help the hearing understand the needs of the deaf. It takes time for a person to truly understand the respect necessary for the deaf community. A major example of respect to a deaf person is the language used to describe the deaf. For instance, the deaf do not like to be called deaf dumb or deaf mute. Instead, they prefer to be considered deaf or hearing impaired. Another topic expressed by the deaf community is to not speak out loud to others if you know how to sign. I have found in my situation trying to learn to sign and speak with the deaf that it is very rude to speak in front of a deaf person if you can sign.
