Statistics as a whole are very hard to interpret because of the various meanings one statistic can take on. This is a large sociological issue because Statistics flood the television, paper, and society as a whole. ... The way this closely relates, is that people who generate these statistics use their terminology to either intentionally deceive the people they are presenting the statement to, or perhaps, do it without even realizing it. ... This doesn’t only hold true to statistics and advertising, but also speeches and news reports. So approach these things with a willing and open mind, and think logically about them then the truth will lie within. ... In statistics and advertising there are many instances of symbolic interactionalism. The interactions with these misguided statistics create an illusion of shared social order even when they don’t necessarily understand the true meaning and in fact can be interpreted in different ways. ... Statistics such as crime rates and other negative statistics are put out by functionalists. They basically put out statistics not with the intent of deceiving any one but that of informing them on an important issue.
