Failed America From 1781 to 1789 the Articles of Confederation did not provide the United States with an effective government. There were problems that made the Articles fail quickly. Some of these problems include the way the power was separated, the role congress made, economy, land, and the way the people of the country acted. Of course there were probably many other factors in the failure of the government, but these however seemed most back breaking. A large problem was the separation of powers. There really was none. Most decisions were up to congress. There was no executive branch. Which means there was no one to make the final decision. They didn’t have one great leader to run the country; which is ironic because greatest men in our history were alive in this period. There was no judicial branch. Because most of the judicial branch was made up of British nobility, Americans didn’t want them to have much authority. Congress pretty much had the power. One would probably think that congress had things in order and knew how to control a country. Well one was wrong. Congress had very little power. They had no say so over regulating commerce. The people in America were still very upset about the navigation acts. They didn’t want anyone to say who they could trade with. According to document A Rhode Island refused to give congress the power to regulate commerce and collect taxes, because they basically thought that congress wouldn’t know how to do it the right way.
