Crouching behind a dense clump of bushes, I peer out into the endless terrain of dense jungle. My instincts tell me that there is someone following me, tracking me, hell-bent on killing me, thus failing my mission. I cannot, will not, let that happen. If I die, the mission will be aborted and the death of thousands of American soldiers will be assured. I wipe the sweat from my face with my hand and look out again. My entire body aches and my legs are exhausted from searching for this rouge mercenary. In the split second that I let my eyelids drop and my head recline into the comfort of my pack, my would-be killer capitalizes and opens fire from an unseen location to the left. Instinctively, I duck my head and race to the nearest place of protection, zigzagging on the way to make myself a harder target to hit. Breathlessly charging toward safety, I throw myself behind the shelter, desperately searching for cover.
