V.S. Naipaul introduces the story, which takes place in Trinidad, with a description of his former teacher. Mr. Hinds is a young, athletic but poor teacher, who is allowed to beat his pupils as much as he wants. His poverty forces him to give "private lessons", which everybody has to go to. He beats a lot, but incomprehensible he never beats Naipaul. One morning Mr Hinds raffles a goat of his little farm; every pupil is attracted by the prospect of having an animal and milk of his own. So, ... each one risks a shilling to participate in the lottery. Luckily Naipaul wins the goat. The goat is now being fed with fresh grass, which is sold daily by an old man at the road where Naipaul's family lives. Though being fed very well, the goat doesn't start giving milk. After a little while, Naipaul's mother puts a sign out "RAM FOR SERVICE", what means the goat is male. So it isn't able to give milk.
