Patient Right’s Policy
INTRODUCTION
Years ago, healthcare was a hometown doctor and or nurse visiting a family’s home. ... There was no such thing as written rights, informed consents, or legal papers. ... Patients and their families must now question the quality of care, ethics, legal issues, and human rights within the healthcare system. Hospitals and healthcare facilities must now protect their own interests as well as their patients by incorporating a Patient’s Right Policy. This policy must put the patient first and not fall into the business of medicine. ... It must be developed through listening to patients, allowing their active participation, concerned about their well-being, and able to change to fit their needs. ... ” (Cline et al, 2002, 12)
PLAN
In drafting a patient’s right policy, three qualities must be examined and incorporated:
1. Autonomy – patients must feel they are in control, have input, and choices in their health care. ... “Justice compels health professionals to do what is fair, and that determination may pit individual desires fueled by rights of autonomy against the greater needs of society.
