For thousands of years the Kurds have lived under foreign rule. They are living that way even today in Iraq under the ruthless leader Saddam Hussein. The Kurdish fight for independence has only resulted into casualties and more hate. Kurds have endured extreme measures under Iraq and independence is their biggest goal. The countless Kurdish casualties now kindle a new generation of Kurdish separatists. Kurdish separatism in Iraq has resulted in mass demonstrations by the Kurds, the weakening of the economy, the taking of Kurdish rights, and the punishment of numerous Kurds. The Kurds began to fight for independence a lot after WWI when the defeated former Ottoman Empire was being carved up by Western powers. They wanted to form Kurdistan as their homeland, which appeared in maps before WWI. Ultimately, their hopes didn’t come true and parts of Kurdistan were taken by nearby countries including the newly formed country, Iraq. Even though things didn’t go as the Kurds had planned, they still fought for independence within Iraq. Over the years from Iraq’s independence from Great Britain, the Kurds have changed their goals from separatism to at least possessing some basic rights. Kurds trace their history back several thousand years and the first mention of the Kurds was by the Sumerians. The Kurds are non-Arab, Indo-European people with their own history, language and culture. This is a big reason of why the Kurds want their own homeland. Another reason for their fight for independence is that they are the biggest ethnic group in the Middle East without a homeland. Kurdish separatism in Iraq has resulted in mass demonstrations. When unfair elections were being held on September of 1930, Kurds in the town of Sulaymanyia held mass demonstrations.
