According to the Washington Post timeline, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) began its antitrust investigation of Microsoft on May 30, 1990 (8). In 1993, the FTC voted to file charges against Microsoft twice and both times deadlocked on their decision (Timeline 7-8). An agreement is reached between Microsoft and the Justice Department in July of 1994 that required the company change several of its licensing agreements with the makers of personal computers (Timeline 7). In 1995, the Justice Department blocks the Microsoft acquisition of Intuit, Inc. ... charges Microsoft with excluding competitors from selling DOS operating systems and file an antitrust lawsuit (Timeline 7). Microsoft gets approval to acquire WebTV Networks Inc. from the Justice Department in 1997 but antitrust investigation deepens when they announce an investment with rival Apple Computer Inc. ... On October 20, 1997, “the Justice Department sues Microsoft, charging the company with violating a court-approved settlement by requiring computer makers to install its Internet Explorer browser if they want to license Windows 95” (Timeline 6). Shortly after that, attorney generals of more than twenty states file suit against Microsoft for hurting the investigation through non-disclosure agreements with business partners (Timeline 6). ... Jackson issues a preliminary injunction on December 11, 1997 barring Microsoft from requiring Internet Explorer to be installed by computer makers (Timeline 6). Microsoft immediately replies with a solution to give computer makers two less effective options (Timeline 6). Since the two options did not meet the requirements of the preliminary injunction, Jackson held Microsoft in contempt of court until a settlement was reached in January of 1998 (Timeline 3). ...
