11/13/03 A.A. Film Studies Letter to the Directors Dear Hughes brothers, My name is Philip McGahey and I知 currently a student at Washington State University. One of the classes that I知 enrolled in concentrates on the analysis of African American films and how they portray African American culture. Recently our class had the pleasure to watch and review the powerful film Menace II Society that you guys released in the early 1990痴. I知 addressing you this letter to ask your opinion in some questions I have from the film as well as mention some of my personal analysis of the film for your criticism. The first question that I have for you is if Caine is depicted as a hero or a victim in your film? I could consider Caine the hero in the sense that he slowly starts to better himself throughout the film. In comparison to his counter part O-Dog, Caine displays basic examples of morals and caring that other characters in the film are reluctant to show.
