THESIS “With it developed the special racial feeling- whether hatred, or contempt, or pity, or patronization-that accompanied the inferior position of blacks in America for the next 350 years- that combination of inferior status and derogatory thought we call racism.” Well you’d think such a long thesis would be easy to work with but its not, so I will break it down by using key words and quoting examples of the key words in the passage. • Hatred- “…the frenzy for limitless profit that comes from capitalistic agriculture; the reduction of the slave to less than human status by the use of racial hatred, with that relentless clarity based on color, where white was master, black was slave.” • Contempt- “This unequal treatment, this developing combination or contempt and oppression, felling and action, which we call “racism” • Pity- {non existent} • Patronization- (dehumanization)- “ [Blacks] were packed aboard the slave ships, in spaces not much bigger than coffins, chained together in the dark, wet slime of the ship’s bottom, choking in the stench of their won excrement.” • Inferior- “…many times slaves run away… if the slave does not immediately return, anyone whatsoever may kill or destroy such slaves by such ways and means as he… shall think fit…” • Derogatory- “before Africans were stamped by it- literally and symbolically- the color black was distasteful… deeply stained with dirt… having dark or deadly purposes… horribly wicked.” • Racism- “A wise master did not… believe that Negroes were natural-born slaves.
