In A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf has set out to convince the reader that a woman needs a room of her own to allow her to be a successful writer. The reasons for this need are many and Woolf discusses them in depth throughout her essay, but parallel to this thesis statement is another statement found in the beginning of the book. “One can not think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” (p.18) The similarity between this and Woolf’s thesis statement is no coincidence as they share a common theme. A woman can not be a successful writer without the full support of her surroundings. Without the synergy between woman and environment, the full potential of the individual can never be reached. This is one of the main premises that Woolf so eloquently exposes in her lecture. The way Woolf chooses to illustrate her point is not exactly straight forward and is somewhat convoluted; but as a whole, it gives the reader a strong viewpoint from which to consider the evidence for her argument. There are many elements of a woman’s environment that must work in conjunction in order to successfully support the mind, body, and soul of the individual in question. These elements affect an individual’s characteristics in a hierarchical manner. The mind, body, and soul all require nourishment from their environment, but without the combined effort of all three aspects, no one aspect can survive alone. The body is the most essential aspect of any person who must be supported by their surroundings. Without the existence of the body, the conditions of the mind and soul have little meaning in the overall condition of the individual. A woman must be of good health if she is to make a difference in her own life as well as in the lives of others. This was a problem for the women of Woolf’s time because of the inequality in the treatment and regard for women as compared to the supposedly superior men of society.
