Ulysses : by Alfred, Lord Tennyson : Old age. Fighting off feelings of uselessness and not liking the way the new generation : handles things. That's what this poem is all about. It's about past glory and facing death. : Lord Tennyson uses a mythical character from James Joyce's novel "Ulysses" as his : vehicle. I found this poem to have great depth and also to be inventive. We understand : that a hero would have a hard time being a regular guy sitting around the castle, living on : past glory. The point is that even regular guys tend to have a hard time coping with those : feelings. If you follow Kennedy's suggestion and compare this poem to "Sir Patrick : Spence", you find an entirely different kind of king. Instead of a brave and heroic king, : you find a pathetic weakling who sends Sir Patrick and the other nobles to their deaths.
