Death of a Salesman In every piece of literature there are certain characteristics that set the tone and mood. Some pieces have a futuristic setting and that trait helps define the piece more clearly. Others have an aspect of strong bonding either between friends, family, pets, etc. Whatever the factors may be, certain elements in novels, plays, poems, etc help make the overall mood of the play more effective. In the play “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, there is overwhelming sense of loneliness and loss that is expressed throughout the text. These particular sentiments help propel the plot. There are several ways that the feeling of loneliness is conveyed. One way is through flashbacks. Willy Loman, the main character, frequently has flashbacks of his younger days and happier times.
