Overall Impact: 2
The co-founder of the renowned rap group Public Enemy, Chuck D, made an appearance at the University of Kentucky on November 14, 2003 to speak on issues concerning race, rap, reality, and technology. ...
In order to take an in depth look at the speech one must first analyze the credibility of the speaker. According to Stephen Lucas “a speaker’s credibility is affected by two factors: Competence and Character (429).” As far as competence is concerned, Chuck D is one that has a vast knowledge of race, reality, and the rap world, this is the atmosphere that he has been surrounded by through out his career as a musician. ...
Chuck D did not analyze his audience to the extent that he should have. ... ” Although not all of these traits were necessary to analyze for this speech and Chuck D did recognize his audience to be that of college students, he failed to realize the trait that was probably one of the most important to his speech. Looking at the audience only about half was black, but if you just listen to Chuck D’s speech it would be conceivable to assume that his audience was all black. ... For these reasons I generously give Chuck D a 2 for overall impact.
Organization: 2
Although, Chuck D really did not have a clear cut opening to his speech he did mention the four main points that he would address in his speech: race, rap, reality, and technology. ... Looking at each of these orders closely I could not find one that matched Chuck D’s continuous looping pattern of organization. He would mention one or two sub points about a main point and somehow arrive at the next before he’d start the process all over again without mentioning his last point, technology. The stories he’d use as examples would do the same as well, especially with the story of Tupac. He’d start to tell it and change the subject and later he would randomly pick the story back up again.
As I mentioned before there was no real introduction to Chuck D’s speech and the conclusion was very similar. ... And as for the conclusion, it basically consisted of Chuck D realizing that he had spent entirely too long talking and need to wrap his speech up.
