In the “Autobiographical Notes” of James Baldwin, there is a paragraph with which he isolates from the rest of his writing to approach a number of his own personal feelings and ideas with the reader. ... ” Baldwin’s sarcasm in this statement poses a question in the reader’s mind concerning the origin from which Baldwin derived his opinion that all blacks lived in the jungle and congregated in tribes. Maybe, the upbringing he received in predominantly white cultures eventually formed such an opinion in Baldwin’s mind, an opinion with which he uses as the foundation of numerous written and verbal attacks on his own “roots”.
Baldwin’s time spent in the Western civilization over the years of his life provided no cultural support for him at certain times of struggle in which he may have needed to look back upon the previous actions of world-renowned black poets or scholars.
