I was delighted to receive such flattering offers. I was granted a contract to play in Europe and was admitted to the Iranian Youth National Soccer Team, even though I had never been to my parents’ native country. But I did not want to play on a team anymore, even though soccer had been my lifetime passion. I had been the captain of various soccer teams and played a key role in my club’s first-place national ranking during my senior year in high school. The offers delighted me not because of the athletic opportunities they presented, but because they represented a recognition of many years of dedication and perseverance. My mastery of soccer through the years has served as my model of success in all areas of life. In my earlier years of play, if an opponent bypassed me or stole my ball in a flash, I did not become discouraged. I would wake up early to run, practice, revise my technique, and return to the field. I continued running, practicing, and playing over the months and years until I was the one eluding my opponents.
