NO-No Boy Book Review

No-No. The answers to two unsettling questions: Whether or not you want to serve in the armed forces, or whether or not you want to swear allegiance to Japan and be on their side. Ichiro, the main character in this novel answered, “No-No.” Throughout the novel he had problems with his identity. He did not feel American because he was Japanese, and he did not feel Japanese because he grew up in America. Ichiro did not want to join the draft where he would serve a government that treated him differently for being an American, but not really, because he was Japanese. Nor did he want to take Japan’s side because his lack of sensibility for Japan. He grew up with a mother that was pro- Japan who tried to instill the pride and loyalty to her children, she believed that Japan was winning the war.
