... that led to the first Deaf president of the only Deaf University in the world. The university had been established 124 years earlier and had not yet had a deaf president until that time. This event became known as Deaf President Now (DPN). This event was more than just a protest it was also “a unique coming together of Gallaudet students, faculty and staff with the national deaf community—all bound by clear and defined goals.”
Supporters of the Deaf President Now movement believed that it was time for a deaf person to run the world’s only university for the deaf and hard of hearing students. But on March 6, when the decision of the universitys Board of Trustees to name Elisabeth Ann Ziner, a hearing women with no previous knowledge of the deaf community, the university’s seventh president. It brought about a great disturbance to the students of Gallaudet University and to the deaf community.
