West Side Story is basically Romeo and Juliet in a modern setting and instead of Montagues and Capulets, there are Americans and Puerto Ricans. The two groups have a hard time getting along and a big reason that they don’t is language. Language itself is not the thing that keeps these groups separate. Sure, the Americans may pick on them about the way that they speak, but it’s not so cut and dry. It is because the difference in language prevents them from exchanging cultures. It is difficult for two different cultures to find something in common. Their food is different, their clothes are different, they dance different, their appearance is different, their language is different, and their overall way of life is different.
