Ocean’s Eleven is a film about eleven professional criminals who come together to pull off a heist that seems impossible. The men want to rob three Las Vegas casinos. The movie chronicles the brainstorming of the plan, the gathering of the eleven men, their preparation for the heist and finally the successful completion of the robbery. Along the way there are a lot of speed bumps, one liners and even a stormy romance. This movie could best be described as smart and fun. The film used building suspense, implicit ideology and a complex plot to keep the spectators’ eyes on the screen. It is difficult to place Ocean’s Eleven into one specific genre. There are many different angles to look at the film from. The initial angle of the movie is suspense. The 11 men are trying to rob three casinos, which seems like an impossible task. The last third of the movie follows the men through their heist, which is accompanied by many blunders and problems. This part of the movie could also be placed in the action genre because there is movement, disguises, gadgets and explosives. There is consistently something exciting happening on screen. Even though there is an abundance of suspense and action, the characters never take themselves too seriously and are constantly throwing out one-liners. This could place the movie in the comedy genre because the characters poke fun at each other, get themselves in humorous situations and much of the dialogue is aimed to make the audience laugh out loud. A love story is also thrown into the mix of things. This along with all the handsome men in the cast would make some quick to classify the movie as a “chick flick” or woman’s picture. However, the male characters are very cool and partake in dangerous activities. This creates a balance between what men are thought to enjoy and what women are thought to enjoy.
