Bipolar I disorder is a condition in which periods of depression alternate with periods of mania or lesser degree that effects less then 2% of the human population and is equally common in both men and woman. Although the exact genetic defect is still unknown, bipolar disorder is widely accepted as a hereditary defect which would make this particular disorder endogenous.

Since manic-depressive illness recurs in most cases, there are several treatments of Bipolar Disorder. Manic or hypomanic episodes can be treated like acute mania and depressive episodes are usually treated like depression, but antidepressants are only used for a short period of time because they themselves can cause additional, unwarranted mood swings, therefore “most people with manic-depressive disorder should be given mood stabilizing drugs, such as lithium… (Berkow, 410).
