The story The Things They Carried was a good short story. I felt that Tim O’Brien gave a real sense of being a soldier in the battlefield. Since the majority of my family has served in the military, in one way or another, this story was a lot more interesting to me than some of the others. When discussing “carrying things out of necessity” that’s exactly what appears the soldier’s are doing. It says in the book that they carried: pocket knives, can openers, dog tags, canteens of water, and guns. Many of the objects they carried were necessary for survival, but I do not feel that a packet of Kool-Aid or condoms were absolutely necessary on this tour. On the other hand, the kind of women that would be over there, it might be the smartest plan to protect yourself, maybe double.
