The novel, One True Thing, discusses and depicts the very nature of love, exemplified primarily through the complex relationships within the Gulden family. Ellen Gulden is a symbolic figure of the nature of love- represented through her journey towards both the acknowledgment and appreciation of her mother. Such recognition becomes possible as a result of the value Ellen gradually places, not only on her mother?s responsibility as ?homemaker? but also as a positive role model. However, Ellen is only able to afford her mother such importance and love subsequent to her acceptance of her own self, truly indicating the very nature of love. The nature of love; its strength, significance and countless facets, are highlighted through the relationship between Ellen Gulden and her parents, the unconditional love of Kate and George, the compassion and empathy of both Teresa Guerrero and Dr. Cohn and also through the loyalty of Mrs. Forburg. The nature of unconditional love is explored and displayed through the relationship of Kate and George Gulden- although it may be noted that Ellen?s perception of her parents questionably leads her to focus heavily on the negative or seemingly imbalanced facets of George and Kate?s relationship.
