When the power system on the east coast of the United States failed, a spotlight highlighted the inherent problems in the system. At the base of these problems resides an under funding of the national power grid. According to an editorial from London’s Petroleum Economist, “the uncertainties and shortcomings of the regulation process resulted in the actual transmission system being neglected”. Reliability standards and uniform processes are in place, but implementing and maintaining them is not required. Compliance with these standards must be enforced to avoid a potentially more catastrophic event in the future.
