Abraham Lincoln and Slavery
President Abraham Lincoln is best known for his leadership of the Union through the Civil War and as the President who freed the slaves. ... Some historians believe that Lincoln’s main reason for freeing the slaves was only to help the Union fight the Confederates in the Civil War. This is untrue; while Lincoln was not an abolitionist, he did not like the idea of having slaves and thought that every man was worthy of their natural human rights.
Abraham Lincoln did not want to abolish slavery until at least 1900; he was also reluctant to embrace the title given to him as the great emancipator.
