English Essay
In what ways does audience’s impression of Othello, when he appears on stage in Act 1 Scenes 2 and 3, differ from the impression received about Othello in Act 1 Scene 1, before he makes his entry?
In these scenes of William Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Othello, we found two different situations. Before his entrance, scene 1, we have the impression of a very cruel and unfair Othello whose image is completely sexual and bestial. On the contrary, after his entrance, scenes 2 and 3, we sense a very noble and confident Othello whose decisions are wise and rational.
From the start of scene 1 we receive all kind of details about Othello mainly by the conversation of Iago and Roderigo. The description of Othello in Iago’s speech is always related with images of beasts. Othello’s is ‘an old black raw tupping’ Desdemona, which he has also ‘stolen’ from Brabantio’s house or Othello’s sexual intercourse was ‘making the beast with two backs’. Othello is often seen as a beast being really brutal and images also refer to its ethnic group. Iago and Roderigo have reasons to hate Othello and in a way they explain to the audience their reasons.
