House of Spirits

The House of the Spirits takes its reader on an intricate and quite beautiful journey through the fascinating lives of its characters. The story line, which begins around the beginning of the 20th century continues until the 1970s, gives one insight to four generations of a family and the struggles they go through with politics, romance, and life in general. The most dominate male role in the novel is that of Esteban Trueba, however, it seems as if the true backbone of the story lies within the female characters. All the women in the novel were complete individuals marked with traces of magical realism. They all seem to be very independent and free-willed which, especially at times earlier in the novel, do not go along with the seeming patriarchy that is deeply imbedded in the culture those in the story. As is the title of this paper, the women in the novel seem to triumph over patriarchy. To fully understand how they triumph over patriarchy, one must first fully understand what patriarchy is. Defining patriarchy explains the reasons for the treatment of women through the ages and what it means to their future and success in life. Patriarchy not only explains how a society functions but also how it controls women. Patriarchy is best defined as control by men. One can see drastic differences in the levels of male power while reading, especially given the changes in time periods, which in itself is responsible for changes.
