Steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness. This is the dictionary’s definition for a word used in every day life. A word that people use when they are describing things like doing the impossible, beating the odds, and overcoming adversity. To me the word perseverance means not giving up and it plays a part in the lives many people who just won’t accept No for an answer. When many children are young they are told the classic story of The Little Engine That Could. This is a classic example of perseverance. In the story there is a train, he is not as strong or fast as the other trains, but he does have one thing that is vital to perseverance, this is heart. Well the Little Engine is asked to go on a trip in the place of another train and he accepts the mission. Some of the others don’t think he will be able to make it on time because he is smaller and weaker than they are. But the Little Engine believes in himself and chugged along the track as hard as he could pushing for the deadline. As his destination grew closer the Little Engine spotted a giant hill in the distance. The closer it got the bigger it seemed. Finally the Little Engine reached the hill. It started up the hill. It was hard for the Little Engine but he kept going have way up the hill the Little Engine started chanting to himself, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.” The more the Little Engine said this, the harder and harder he tried until he persevered and made it to the destination and met his deadline.
