The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) is a national charitable agency providing services to individuals across Canada to whom loss of vision is a central concern in personal and social adjustment. The CNIB also acts as a consultant and resource agency to helping professionals, government departments, and the private industry. The basic aim of the CNIB is to help blind, deafblind, and visually impaired people find ways to live satisfying, healthy lives. A main belief that underlies all CNIB services is that blind, deafblind, and visually impaired individuals can be as independent and involved as they choose within the mainstream of community life. We selected this particular agency because we believe it represents a variety of the population that are impacted by the determinants of health and the agency is very successful in helping people by using various health promotion strategies. We feel that the two determinants of health that have the greatest impact on the wellbeing of the population served by CNIB are social support networks and employment and working conditions. The Ottawa Charter strategy that we feel would make the greatest impact on this population would be creating supportive environments. The implementation of this strategy allows public health nurses and the community to be involved with this population group. Determinant of Health #1: The first determinant of health that we feel affects this population significantly is social support networks. Social support not only affects health, but also health behavior and the usage of health services through the acts of emotional and informational support. It has been shown that “some experts believe that the health effects of social relationships may be as important as established risk factors, such as smoking” (Perry & Potter, 2001, p.11). This shows that research has found results of a link between social support and healthy conclusions. Social support can help in a variety of ways including information to assist in coping; encouragement in times of crisis; and help people maintain a sense of control. Without social support people lack the extra needed strength to go through times of distress.
