Midterm Exam In an effort to establish a democracy in Iraq, Madam President must be educated on several issues concerning American politics. The first is the fact that American democracy is largely based upon the Constitution. Madam President also needs to be informed on the development and function of political parties and the electoral system. The US Constitution is the basis upon which America was founded and continues to exist. It identifies and breaks down the three branches of government: legislative, executive and judicial; as well as describes the duties and powers of each branch. The amendments to the Constitution are the most important to individuals as they list innate freedoms that nobody has the right to take away at any time. These freedoms include those of speech, press and religion. The Constitution remains to be the foundation upon which America continues to thrive. Political parties gradually developed from factions, “divisions within the population, first formed over economic interests” (Maisel 30). One of the first political parties was the Federalist Party headed by Alexander Hamilton during George Washington’s Presidency. In an effort to counter Federalist policies, Thomas Jefferson created the Democratic Republicans.
