The most developed element of “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” is the setting. For the most part, the story takes place in the law office, which, from its description, seems like a dull and dreary work environment. In the exposition, Herman Melville describes two windows, one which has a view, and another whose view is blocked by a brick wall. The latter is the one that has importance in the story, and helps to develop one of the symbols. Walls have a big part in Bartleby’s story. Before he is even introduced, we know that the office is on Wall Street, which later has more importance when we put together all the examples of isolation and containment that are present through out the story.
