Gwendolyn Brooks’ “We Real Cool” I like “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks. In fact, it is one of the few poems I actually enjoy. It is short, sweat, and to the point. It is about seven pool-playing friends, who play pool at a pool hall called the Golden Shovel. The poem does not reveal how old they are, but it is my belief that they are in their late teens or early twenties. I like the way that the poem is structured. After the italicized introduction, each sentence ends with the word “we”. The narrator keeps referring to the group as a whole, which means they would always stay friends, no matter what. The poem itself is only ten lines long. The ten lines are arranged in couplets. This creates five stanzas or five pairs of couplets. The poem “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks is only ten lines long. It is divided into five couplets. It is about seven pool-playing friends at the pool hall called the Golden Shovel. The poem tells us about the lives of the seven friends in the last four couplets. The poem has a rhyme scheme, but it does not begin until the second couplet.
