William Galston defines the “regime effect” as an unprecedented degree on individual rights, personal choice, and egalitarian relationships. I would have to agree whole heartedly that this phrase correctly characterizes American attitudes. There are obviously exceptions, but America as a whole are concerned with taking care of “me”. American is still caught up in a era of excess and greed. Often referred to as the “me” generation, young adults today worry about one thing, themselves. I describe young adults as those who just turned 18 and are on their own for the first time, to those who still are raising children who are at home. Roughly I am speaking of the 18 to 45 year age group. I believe the middle of the group to be the worst offenders. This group tends to worry about “now”. They always want the best for themselves right now, with repercussions of the consequences of there actions. A perfect example of this was brought up by Whitehead in the alarming rate of divorce. I’m happy now-let’s get married. I’m not happy now-let’s get divorced.
