Was Shakespeare’s Hamlet insane or was it a part of a clever revenge plotted deep within the young Dane’s mind? This and other interesting questions arise as the reader ties the loose ends with his imagination. Hamlet is not really Shakespeare’s play, he copied it from a Danish legend, which had slightly different events, but the main idea was the same – vengeance. Shakespeare tried to make it more interesting and fun by leaving loose ends in the story that are open to interpretation or could only be filled in by one’s imagination. Although this play is very tragic the format that Shakespeare uses is the same for every tragedy that he writes. So what makes this play stand out? I think that because Shakespeare made this play more breathtaking by making sure that the reader is confused whether the main character is insane or is he just pretending. One reason why Hamlet seems insane is because he has a strange way of showing Ophelia his love when he is in distress. Hamlet‘s treatment of Ophelia can definitely be considered irrational. When Hamlet appeared out of his mind again, Polonius told Ophelia to keep away from him and to inform him of anything that goes on between the two of them.
