Schizophrenia is the most severe & devastating mental illness that usually develops in the late teens & early 20’s. As well as living with the crippling symptoms of this condition such as hallucinations, bizarre delusions & psychomotor abnormalities to name a few, people with schizophrenia also have to cope up with social exclusion & discrimination often accompanying the diagnosis. The Oxford English Dictionary defines stigma as a “mark of shame.” Not unless the stigma is reduced & society’s attitudes is changed, the quality of life of these people will never improve. Hence, it is incumbent on each & every individual to help eliminate the stigma but as to how, remains a challenge to us all. ... “ Dispelling the stigma of schizophrenia: A global campaign launches in Canada” The Journal of Addiction and Mental Health March-April 1999: pp8-12 , talks about the overall attitude of the public with mental illness being at the bottom of the barrel & schizophrenia at the bottom of mental health .
