IB Higher Level Biology
The Liver
1) Discuss the role of the liver in homeostasis.
The liver is the largest organ in the abdomen of a human. ... The liver has a double blood supply. The hepatic artery delivers oxygenated blood so that liver cells can generate energy by aerobic respiration to carry out functions which demand a lot of energy. The hepatic portal vein takes the blood from the intestines to the liver. This enables the liver to process substances that are absorbed from the gut before they enter the general circulation. The lymphatic vessels from the gut then carry out fatty substances to the liver so they can be processed before the substances go through the rest of the body.
