Good Will Hunting Highlights and Review
“[Good Will Hunting] is most effective as a parable for the universal experience of growing up and assuming adulthood,” remarked Judy Gerstel from the Toronto Star newspaper. Academy- Award winning actor Matt Damon co-wrote the film during an English class while attending Harvard University. ... Good Will Hunting does an exceptional job exploring relationships between education, opportunity, and social class, although some aspects seem to coincide with Hollywood procedure.
“Good Will Hunting equals certain Oscaring,” remarked Duane Byrge from The Hollywood Reporter. Will Hunting’s internal conflict with his past, working class status, and lack of formal education shaped his character into the focus of discussion by many film critics and scholars. “Will Hunting is a working-class kid with a genius IQ who can play stump-the-professors and win big but can’t muster a passing score in the one category that counts – his personal life,” Byrge said. Summarizing, he said, “The film is well-realized… the acting is brilliant overall. ... and ends up as a film is not your run-of-the mill movie. ... ” Gerstel remarked, “For all its appeal when the guys are being guys, Good Will Hunting just doesn’t add up. ...
Good Will Hunting showed an exceptional display of social class in education, not only through Will’s character, but also through the sub-plots.
