INTRODUCTION – WARM UPS
Warm ups are a very important process which help the body prepare for any sporting activity. ‘Arthritis Victoria for Muscular- Skeletal Health Online’ say that,
“ Warm up is the preparation for more vigorous activity and is essential before training and competition.”
Therefore I believe that warm ups are very important for all participants in any sporting activity. Our muscles, tendons and joints become more flexible and will function more effectively when they are warm, so in order to prepare our body for an activity it is important that we always perform a warm up.
REASONS FOR WARM UPS
There are many reasons for warming up before an activity, however the main reasons are
· It prepares the body for the activity
· It attempts to maximise performance
· It also attempts to avoid the possibility of suffering from muscle soreness/injury
There are also some psychological reasons for warming up, a warm up allows the athlete to prepare psychologically for the training/event ahead. ...
‘ Sports Coach online’ states how our performance will be improved and how we will benefit from our warm up. The warm up helps increase the speed of the contractions and relaxation of our muscles, as well as allowing a much greater amount of movement because our muscles have been warmed up.
TYPES OF WARM UP
There are two types of warm up, general and specific. Usually a warm up consists of both of these in order to help increase the body temperature and prepare the muscles and joints for the activity ahead.
General warm up- this consists of general movement to help raise the heart rate for example some light jogging.
Specific warm up- this relates to the activity that follows, therefore equipment may be brought in for example some footballs for dribbling.
MOBILITY EXERCISES
Mobility exercises must be included in a warm up in order to mobilise and prepare our joints for an activity. ...
WARM UP FOR BASKETBALL
Before taking part in any sport you must have a warm up, but for basketball specifically this is an example of a warm up that could be performed before taking part in the game.
