As I enter the human anatomy lab, the stinking smell of formalin signals an impending encounter with the dead, a very close and intimate encounter with a dead body lasting for two semesters. Anatomy I involves studying the gross human body through first hand dissection, while Anatomy II involves all body organs taken out from the cadaver. To facilitate dissection the class was thrown into groups of five members, each group was assigned a cadaver to dissect. The initial handling of a dead body has been a shock on my part, considering that I dreaded viewing the coffins of dead relatives and friends in funerals but now I am confronted with the reality that I have to study in great detail a dead body by close contact. ...
We named our cadaver “Esperanza” after our terror professor who makes anatomy students suffer so much. ... At first I was bothered to be sleeping with dead body parts (I took the specimens to my room since I cannot just keep them anywhere, stray cats may mistake them for goodies). ... After two semesters of Anatomy, I learned a lot about the human body, and Esperanza had been a perfect subject. ... But she is patiently waiting for the next batch of anatomy students of the coming semesters. ... In reality, the body of a dead man who happens to die in a foreign place can be claimed by relatives. ... That might be the reason why Esperanza ended up in our anatomy lab, in exchange for a considerable amount of money.
