The Great Awakening captured the imaginations of colonists all over America and instilled in them a rekindled longing for religious. Religious belief was at an all time low during the early eighteenth century due largely in part by church reformation and liberal thought taking over people’s minds. When things seemed bleakest for all churches, pastors such as John Edwards and George Whitefield start preaching sermons with a new found fire in their voices, which engulfed all that listened to them. Soon all preachers imitated these men’s style and had helped to revive the public’s interest in religious pureness. Originally, most churches only allowed people to join if they were baptized. This changed when many churches decided to lift the sanction and allow all who wanted to join, to join. Due to this liberalization of Church rules, it leads to the people thinking more liberally about their religious beliefs.
