Critically examine the contribution of post modernism
to an understanding the role of religion in contemporary society. ... This fresh perspective contradicts some of the major theories of religion, particularly on secularisation. It also denies that religion has any effect on wider society. ... This fits with a marxist view of religion. Marx believed that in a socialist society religion would disappear as their was no longer a need for it. In todays western societies there is (arguably) very little oppression and from a marxist view religion is not needed to ‘dull the pain’. The idea that modern capitalist societies would undermine religion is supported by other classic sociologists of religion.
