At the Chapman Middle School in Sheridan, Oregon it is back to school as normal for the children. But the school staff and the 8th grade parents have to start thinking about the last day of school.
Over the years, it has become normal for the 8th grade class to have what is called ˇ§skip day.ˇ¨ This is where the second to last day of school the 8th grade class goes on a trip for the day, to a place that the 8th graders have decided on at the beginning of the school year, and this brings us to our current problem.
The 8th grade class of 2004 was asked to provide a list of places that they would like to go to for skip day. ... This would mean an overnight trip, which has not been done in the past, and would require approval from the Yamhill County School Board. ... Hood, third choice was to re-create what the school does for the children in the 6th grade, which is out-door school. ...
Meanwhile the 8th grade parents form a committee, and start trying to second guess where they think the 8th grade class will want to go for ˇ§skip day.ˇ¨ Information is provided about where the 8th graders went last year, and how much funds were raised to go on this trip.
Immediately, the parents state that these trips have gotten too costly and that the children are just trying to out-due each other. The parents put together a list of their choices to present to the 8th grade class, which consist of places like: bowling, roller-skating, and swimming all in one day, going to a health club in Dallas, Oregon for the day.
