Who James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891. James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario and he was educated at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal. He was the physical education teacher at McGill University and at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. At Springfield College (which was then the Y.M.C.A. training school), James Naismith, under the direction of American physical education specialist Luther Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball. James also became a YMCA director in Denver and Kansas. The court at the University of Kansas is named after him. What Basketball is a sport. It is played with 10 people, 5 to each team. Basketball is played on a court 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. The objective of the game is to shoot the ball into a basket that is 10 feet above the ground.
