There are many ways to measure a person’s intelligence. We can measure intelligence by talking to a person, giving them an essay test, or we can give them a standardized test. Standardized tests have been the most popular way of determining a person’s intelligence level. Standardized tests give you the ability to relate the person’s scores to the average scores of a representative sample of people, telling you where the person stands in relation to the average. ... At the present, it seems as though standardized testing has become the only way to measure intelligence and has even become a factor in whether or not children graduate from high school. As standardized testing has gained popularity, no one has questioned its ability to measure intelligence but people have simply taken this ability for granted. Standardized testing is a good way to measure a person’s test taking skills, but is not a good way to measure intelligence or better the educational system.
Standardized testing has many pros, such as standardized testing will: help identify underprivileged school districts that need more money, stop children that are unqualified from graduating high school, and early standardized tests will identify children with learning disabilities and children that need more direction and attention from teachers.
Standardized tests will help identify underprivileged school districts that need more money because school districts that score low need better resources and teachers. ... Standardized tests not only affect students but also have now grown to be tests of teachers; low scores could mean teachers losing their jobs or administration losing their jobs. ...
Standardized tests will stop unqualified children from graduating high school. New York and Massachusetts already have standardized tests that students must pass in order to graduate from high school. ...
Another useful aspect of standardized tests is that they can be used to identify children with learning disabilities at an early age. Standardized tests such as the IOWA exam allow teachers and parents to see their children’s performance in relation to the average of his or her peers. ... On the other side of this, teachers can be sent mixed messages about children from standardized tests such as children with Hyperplexia. ... Teachers many not know how to label these children but standardized testing will at least show the teacher the child is proficient at reading-related things, whereas if he were not given standardized tests he may be labeled as simply slow overall.
Standardized tests are a good way to predict a person’s future performance or capacity to learn.
