National vs. State Government and the Fight Over Medicinal Marijuana To those unfortunate individuals who live a life of incessant pain due to chronic and incurable illness, marijuana is something that has the ability to ease some of their suffering. Marijuana is that which can alleviate their pain, increase their appetite, but not only for food, but for life. When used by AIDS and cancer patients, marijuana reduces nausea and vomiting and increases appetite which if unaltered could lead to possible malnutrition. When used by glaucoma patients, marijuana reduces intraocular pressure, alleviating the pain and slowing, if not stopping to progress of the disease. When used by multiple sclerosis sufferers, marijuana reduces muscle pain and spasticity as well as relieving tremor and unsteadiness. Marijuana has even been shown to reduce, if not stop seizures in epileptic patients. Many patients also report that marijuana is useful for treating arthritis, migraine, menstrual cramps, alcohol and opiate addiction and depression and other debilitating mood disorders. Since all these medicinal uses for the drug have become known, there have been eight states that have passed laws making it legal to use marijuana in a controlled and medicinal way. In 2001, the DEA raided the LA Cannabis Resource Center seizing all their computers, files, marijuana plants, as well as medicine.
