The three Godfathers of Auteur Theory are the reason we have the theory today. ...
Auteur theorists believe the formal competence of a director as a criterion of value, Auteurism is the distinguishable personality of the director being stamped on to the film, the same content should be commonplace in all of an Auteur’s films, there should be recurrent characteristics of style, which act as a signature to the director, such as archetypal characters that are similar in the way they look, and act. ... However, there are many criticisms to this theory, the main criticism towards the Auteur theory is, how can one person do the direction/production/screenplay/acting etc, all by themselves.
