Title IX is the Educational Amendments, passed by Congress in 1972 and signed by President Nixon, which banned gender discrimination in schools receiving federal funds, whether it be in academics or athletics. Title IX is also a portion of the Educational Amendments of 1972 in which prohibits sex discrimination in a school that receives any type of federal funding. ... Even though Title IX is hurting some men’s sports teams, it is effectively changing the equality between men and women in academics and athletics.
There are many positive changes to the way of life is today compared to 1972 and a great deal of this should be owed to Title IX. According to the Herald Company, their article, Title IX, states that, “In 1971 less than 300,000 high school girls participated in sports. Because of Title IX the number of girls playing high school sports is now estimated at 2. ... These percentages and statistics show how much Title IX has affected the equality in athletics. ... To maintain percentages Title IX decreased participation in many excellent men’s sports such as male gymnastics, soccer, and wrestling. ... It is hard to find anyone opposed to Title IX because it is a law that is against discrimination. It is also hard for the current generation to see how much has changed in athletics today because of Title IX.
