To: Trenton Bison of Miracle Theatre Works From: Michael Reese, Director of A Doll House Re: [ Nora and Torvald’s physical contact in the final scene: D3] As I have examined the final scene of the play, it has become apparent to me that very particular blocking needs to be executed in order for the audience to experience and understand the transition Nora has made as a character. Being that Nora has reached a level of independence from Torvald, it has been brought to my attention that in the final scene, she should avoid physical contact with him. Other producers say that this “void” interaction between the two would enhance Nora’s transition from a pitied and incapable mother and wife to an independent woman who has a mission to accomplish. Personally, I have decided otherwise. Knowing the transition that Nora has accomplished, I feel it extremely necessary that she attempts and executes physical contact with Torvald. With her doing so, it would show more assertiveness and self assurance that what she’s doing is right, and that she has the capability to react to her feelings. The idea of Nora having an “in your face” approach towards Torvald (spectacle wise) helps create a certain level of confidence that I feel the audience would appreciate.
