Lady and the Tramp
The classic Disney movie, directed by Clyde Geronimi and Wilfred Jackson, Lady and the Tramp is an important movie to study because like all Disney movies this was made for children to watch. ... This movie shows the traditional and ideal relationship between males and females through Jim Dear and Darlings marriage and Lady and Tramps meeting, dating, and sort of marriage (dogs can’t really get married, obviously). Jim Dear and Tramp play out the traditional masculine roles in their interaction with Darling and Lady. Likewise, Darling and Lady show traditional feminine characteristics through their interaction with Jim Dear and Tramp. There are a few times where the gender roles are reversed between Lady and Tramp but Jim Dear and Darling never have a moment of gender reversal. Walt Disney’s Lady and the Tramp shows the ideal relationship for men and women through its gender discourse. Jim Dear and Darling Lady was given to Darling as a Christmas Present from Jim Dear. The first night that Lady is in the house she is told to sleep in this special basket that was given to her as a bed in a room downstairs. Well no puppy like to be left alone so lady escapes from the room and Jim firmly puts her back to bed and tells her to stay there. ... ” Lady continuously cries and whines and Jim yells at her and tells her to go to bed while each time Darling is sympathetic and wants to let Lady sleep with them. When Lady finally does make it all the way up the stairs to Jim Dear and Darlings bedroom, Darling finally convinces Jim Dear to let lady sleep with them but Jim Dear says “just for tonight.” In this sequence we see the masculine man being firm with lady. ... We also see the feminine woman who feels bad for Lady and wants to give in to what Lady wants. Finally Jim Dear gives in to both the woman and lets Lady sleep in their bed. ... Another scene is the when Jim Dear and Darling are both rocking in front of the fireplace with Lady between them at their feet. ... When we find out that Darling is pregnant, both Jim Dear and Darling change drastically, in their interaction with Lady mostly. ... She is also knitting things for the baby to wear and ignores Lady when she wants to go for a walk or play ball. Jim Dear comes home from work and yells at Lady to stay down and walks right past her through the door instead of their usual race home and letting Lady through the door first. ... When Lady wants to find out what a baby is, Darling is shown holding the baby, sort of dancing with him while singing a song to him. ... When the two come home from their trip, Lady shows them a rat in the baby’s room and all of the women scream. ... At the next Christmas, there is the baby, Lady, tramp, all four of their puppy’s, and then Jock and Trusty, two friends of Lady, all in the house. ... Lady and Tramp Lady was a Christmas present to Darling from Jim Dear. ... The next time we see lady she is running playfully about the yard and finds a rat. ... Meanwhile, the tramp learns that his two friends are locked in the back of the dogcatcher’s wagon. ... Helping his friends and then the confrontation with the dog catcher show Tramp’s masculinity.
